The buzz cut might be the simplest haircut there is: clippers, one short length, all over. But when your barber asks, “What number?”, the answer matters. This guide breaks down each length, the most common styles, and how to keep yours looking sharp.

What Is a Buzz Cut?
A buzz cut is a very short haircut done almost entirely with clippers, usually one length all over, sometimes with shorter or faded sides. It needs no styling, holds up well in the heat, and is a common choice for men with thinning hair, since the even length makes thinner areas less noticeable.
Buzz Cut Lengths: Guard Numbers Explained
Clipper guards are numbered by how much hair they leave behind. The higher the number, the longer the hair.
- No guard (sometimes called a zero): The closest a clipper gets without shaving. Leaves a light layer of stubble.
- #1 (1/8 inch): Very short. Your scalp will show through clearly.
- #2 (1/4 inch): Still short, but with a bit more coverage. One of the most popular buzz cut lengths.
- #3 (3/8 inch): Soft and even, with noticeably less scalp showing.
- #4 (1/2 inch): The longer end of a buzz cut. Holds its shape well and grows out gently.
- #5 and up (5/8 inch and longer): Starts moving out of buzz cut territory and closer to a short crew cut.
Thick, dark hair looks fuller at the same number, while lighter hair can look closer to bald. If you’re unsure, start longer. Your barber can always go shorter.
Types of Buzz Cuts
- Induction cut: No guard or the lowest guard all over. It’s named for the cut military recruits get on their first day.
- Burr cut: A #1 or #2 all over, with a little more texture than an induction cut.
- Butch cut: A #3 or #4 all over. A good first buzz cut if you’re nervous about going short.
- Buzz cut with a fade: The top stays buzzed while the sides and back blend shorter for more contrast. Our post on how to ask for a fade haircut can help you describe it.
- High and tight: A very high fade with just a small patch of length on top. Learn more in our guide to the high and tight haircut.
Want more length on top? That’s a crew cut, which you’ll find in our barber’s guide to every major men’s haircut.
Should You Get a Buzz Cut?
A buzz cut works for almost anyone, but keep a few things in mind:
- Head shape: With so little hair, your head shape is on full display. A longer guard or faded sides can help balance it.
- Scalp: Scars, birthmarks, and sensitive skin will be more visible and more exposed to the sun.
- Commitment: It takes a while to grow back, so a longer guard is a safer first step if you’re on the fence.
How to Ask for a Buzz Cut
Tell your barber:
- Which guard number you want on top.
- Whether you want the sides and back the same length, slightly shorter, or faded.
- How you want the neckline finished: squared, rounded, or tapered.
- Whether you’d like a crisp line-up along the forehead and temples.
Not sure? Ask your barber what suits your hair and head shape, or see our tips on how to tell your barber what you want.
How to Keep a Buzz Cut Looking Sharp
A buzz cut is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. Because the hair is so short, even a little growth changes the shape.
- Book regular touch-ups. Shorter buzz cuts and faded sides lose their crispness fastest, and the neckline is usually the first place it shows. Our guide on how often you should go to the barber can help you find a good rhythm.
- Care for your scalp. Wear a hat or sunscreen outdoors, and use a gentle shampoo and light moisturizer if your scalp feels dry.
- Grow it out with help. If you decide to grow it out, regular trims along the way help it skip the awkward stages, and your barber can shape it into a crew cut or another short style.
- Leave the details to your barber. A one-length buzz is doable at home, but an even crown, a clean neckline, and a smooth fade are much easier in the chair.
