Just 16 miles northeast of Downtown Kansas City, Liberty, Missouri is one of the most genuinely charming communities in the entire metro. It has the bones of a classic American small town — a historic courthouse square, tree-lined streets, a Revolutionary War-era name — and the energy of a growing, thriving suburb that people are proud to call home.
It’s also home to one of our favorite Hudson Hawk locations, tucked inside Liberty Commons at 209 S Stewart Road. Whether you’re a longtime local looking for a go-to barbershop in Liberty, MO, or someone new to the Northland still figuring out the neighborhood, this guide is for you.

A Town with Real History
Liberty isn’t just old in name — it carries genuine history in almost every direction you look.
The city was incorporated in 1829, making it one of the older communities in Clay County. It grew steadily through the 19th century, shaped by its position along key westward migration routes and its identity as a college town. William Jewell College, one of the oldest private colleges in Missouri, was founded here in 1849 and remains a living anchor of the community today.
Then there’s the story that put Liberty on the map for history buffs nationwide. On February 13, 1866, a group of gunmen rode into town and robbed the Clay County Savings Association on the historic square — the first successful daylight bank robbery in peacetime American history. The crime was attributed to the James-Younger Gang, and while no one was ever caught or convicted, it marked the beginning of Jesse James’s outlaw legend. The building still stands today.
The Jesse James Bank Museum
If you haven’t visited the Jesse James Bank Museum on the downtown square, it’s worth an hour of your time. The bank has been restored to look as it did in 1866, with period furnishings, the original vault, and a clock famously set to the exact time of the robbery. It’s the kind of local history that doesn’t need embellishment — the real story is compelling enough.
Liberty Jail Historic Site
Just off the square, the Liberty Jail Historic Site marks where Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter-day Saints movement, was held during the winter of 1838–1839. It’s a significant landmark in American religious history and draws visitors from across the country. The visitor center is well done and free to enter.
Downtown Liberty: The Square and Beyond
Historic Downtown Liberty is built around a classic courthouse square, and it earns the “historic” label without any irony. The Clay County Courthouse anchors the center, surrounded by locally owned shops, restaurants, and galleries that have developed over decades into something genuinely walkable and worthwhile.
The Downtown Liberty organization counts more than 30 boutiques and specialty retailers in the immediate area, and the energy on the square on a nice weekend afternoon feels like what people imagine when they picture small-town America at its best.
Eating and Drinking on the Square
The dining scene in Liberty runs deeper than you might expect for a city its size.
Ginger Sue’s is a Liberty institution — a breakfast and lunch spot known for down-home comfort food, fluffy pancakes, and the kind of welcoming atmosphere that keeps people coming back every Saturday. It’s the sort of place that fills up for a reason.
Conrad’s Restaurant & Alehouse has built a loyal following for its fresh, locally-minded American food and solid beer selection. Family-owned and unpretentious, it captures the spirit of Liberty well.
Huey’s on the Square is the go-to for burgers — casual, affordable, and consistently good. Great for lunch between errands or a quick stop before exploring the rest of downtown.
Luigi’s brings a more upscale Italian experience to the square without losing the warmth that defines Liberty dining. Worth a visit for a proper dinner out.
La Costa Mexicana rounds out the square’s restaurant mix with dependable Mexican food, strong margaritas, and some of the best weekday specials in town.
The Liberty Farmers’ Market
From May through October, the downtown square hosts a Saturday morning Farmers’ Market running from 8 AM to noon. Fresh produce, local honey, baked goods, handmade crafts, and more — it’s one of those weekly traditions that reminds you why people love living in a community like this.
Getting Outside in Liberty
Liberty has more green space and outdoor options than many nearby suburbs, and locals take full advantage of it.
Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary
The Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary is one of the quiet gems of the Kansas City Northland. With about four miles of trails crossing diverse habitats — woodland, prairie, and wetland — it’s an exceptional spot for birding, hiking, and reconnecting with the outdoors without driving far from the city. A nature center with exhibits and a gift shop is open Tuesday through Saturday. Trail access is open daily, with a suggested small donation per visit.
Belvoir Winery & Inn
Sitting on historic grounds about a mile from downtown, Belvoir Winery operates out of a beautifully preserved property that dates back to the late 1800s. It’s a popular spot for tastings, events, and weekend getaways, and it adds a dimension to Liberty’s character that surprises visitors expecting a typical suburb.
Why Liberty Keeps Growing
Liberty is part of what locals call the Northland — the cluster of communities north of the Missouri River that has been among the fastest-developing parts of the Kansas City metro for the past decade. What makes Liberty stand out within that group is its balance: it has real history and a genuine downtown, but it also has the infrastructure and amenities of a modern suburb.
The Liberty Public School District consistently ranks among the strongest in the metro area. William Jewell College brings a college-town energy and arts programming to the community. The location — 16 miles from Downtown KC and close to the airport — makes it practical for commuters and families alike.
For people relocating to the Kansas City area and scoping out the Northland, Liberty tends to make a strong impression quickly.
