A Planned Community with Real History
Prairie Village isn’t an accident. It was designed.
The community was developed in the 1940s by legendary Kansas City developer J.C. Nichols — the same visionary behind the Country Club Plaza — who set out to build an ideal postwar neighborhood for returning soldiers and the young families they were starting. He named it after the Prairie School, a local landmark dating back to 1882. The vision worked: in 1949, the National Association of Home Builders named Prairie Village the best-planned community in the United States.
That planning still shows. The oldest parts of Prairie Village belong to Nichols’ historic Country Club District, and the same design philosophy that made the Plaza famous — walkable blocks, connected sidewalks, shopping woven right into the residential fabric — is exactly what makes Prairie Village feel different from the subdivisions that came after it. Today the city is home to roughly 22,000 residents and remains one of the most in-demand addresses in Johnson County.
The Shopping Districts: Corinth Square & The Shops of Prairie Village
Most suburbs have a strip mall. Prairie Village has two genuinely charming, walkable outdoor shopping districts — and they’re the heart of daily life here.
Corinth Square is the city’s central gathering place and one of the oldest shopping centers of its kind in the metro. It’s an open-air district with a mix of local boutiques, national names, salons, fitness studios, and some of the best restaurants in the area — all connected by wide, walkable sidewalks. A short drive away, The Shops of Prairie Village offers the same quaint, European-flavored feel Nichols was known for — an outdoor center with longtime specialty shops, everyday services, and standout dining.
